A route from Salida to Leadville, Colorado following the historic stagecoach road and Midland railroad corridors. The pathway parallels the Arkansas River and the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway, and traverses over 75 miles of stunning landscapes in central Colorado.

Experience the Stage & Rail

  • 1. Consider hiking, biking or driving

    The 75-mile historic route can be experienced by vehicle, bicycle or, in some sections, hiking. 

  • 2. Choose where to begin your experience

    See where driving, cycling or hiking are options along the Stage and Rail route by checking out the interactive or pdf maps on our maps page.

  • 3. Interpret along the way

    Discover and learn about historic and natural landmarks as you travel the route by consulting our on-line Stage and Rail interpretive brochure.

  • 4. See what needs to be preserved

    Some historic evidence of the stage and railroad days can still be seen along the route. Find out which of these project leaders hope to preserve or stabilize.

  • 5. Learn more, and get involved

    The Stage and Rail project is the result of more than 15 years of community driven effort and planning. You can learn more about its development by reviewing feasibility and master plan documents HERE. You can also visit our Get Involved to see how you can push this project further forward.
